In Beijing, the three-day U.S.-China summit took place from May 13 to 15, 2026. This diplomatic event stole substantial global attention for serving as a follow-up to the U.S.-China meeting at the 2026 APEC Summit, for its timing after the completion of the design of key security policy documents under the Trump administration, and for commencing during the ongoing war in Iran. Additionally, the summit yielded significant results of forging a basis for trust-building diplomacy and ensuring the continuity of summit diplomacy between Washington and Beijing. Still, this year’s bilateral encounter also exhibited intersecting factors: 1) achieving a low threshold aim to stabilize the trade truce, 2) their misaligned security agendas, and 3) a shift in strategic standing. Meanwhile, security implications were derived from various angles of the summit: 1) the erosion of stability in the Taiwan Strait, 2) the prospect of prolonged uncertainty in the Middle East, and 3) reduced attention on the denuclearization of North Korea. Upon a thorough examination of the significant takeaways from the 2026 Beijing Summit between the U.S. and China, South Korea should devise cogent policy measures, specifically by scaling up efforts in cooperative diplomacy for North Korean policy and nuclear deterrence, formulating expansionary diplomacy for the strategic frontier, elevating its involvement in opening the Strait of Hormuz, and pursuing policy resilience.
